Prevent the execution of the Kurdish
journalist Adnan Hassanpur
On Friday 9, November 2007 the Iranian High Court
approved the death sentence which was given to the
Kurdish journalist Adnan Hassanpur on July 16, 2007.
He has been convicted and found guilty of being an
“enemy of God” and accused of giving information on
Iranian military bases to the staff of the USA
foreign ministry. Adnan denies this accusation and
is struggling for his life. It is said that Adnan
did not have a fair trial as the judges took their
decision based on unreliable and colored evidence.
He had been under both psychological torture and
other types of chicanery during his imprisonment.
Adnan
Hassanpur is a member of the Iranian Writer’s
Organization, and he is only guilty of offering
independent and systematic criticism, and of having
different views and opinions to those of the Iranian
government.
Iran has shown, yet again, that it does not have any
tolerance for free speech or different views, even
at a minimal level. Adnan is a victim of Iran’s
intolerant policies against writers and journalists
who struggle for an open and democratic society.
The international community must try to make use of
every relevant channel with the aim of saving Adnan
from the imposed death penalty. Worldwide pressure
on Iran can have positive affects and prevent the
implementation of this unfair sentence. Both massive
civilian activity and protests are needed to
pressurize a change in Iranian strategy and save
Adnan’s life.
We appeal to all freedom lovers and freedom
organizations to react against the approval of the
death penalty for Adnan Hassanpur, and increase the
pressure on the Iranian regime to alter their stance
on this critical and life-threatening issue.
